Alaska Map - This map of the State of Alaska is located in the extreme northwest of North America. It is the largest state in the United States by area and the 7th largest state in the world. However, it is the 3rd least populous state in the country.
Alaska shares borders with British Columbia and the Yukon, the administrative units of Canada. The state also shares a maritime border with Russia, which lies across the Bering Strait. Denali, also known as Mount McKinley is the highest in Alaska as well as the highest peak in North America.
Alaska is the only non-contiguous state of the United States and is actually a part of the US continent. Juneau is the state capital and Anchorage is the most populous city in Alaska. Fairbanks is the largest city in Inland Alaska.
History of Alaska
On March 30, 1867, the territory was purchased by the United States from the Russian Empire for US $ 7.2 million. The region underwent a number of administrative changes before finally being organized as a territory of the United States on May 11, 1912. It was admitted to the Union as the 49th state on January 3, 1959. Today, Alaska's economy is known for its fishing, natural gas, oil, and tourism industries.
Geography of Alaska
Alaska borders Canada's Yukon and British Columbia territories to the east; Pacific and Gulf of Alaska to the south; the Bering Strait, Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea to the west; and the Arctic Ocean and the Beaufort Sea to the north. This is the westernmost state, the northernmost state, and the easternmost state of the country. With an area of 586,412 square miles,
Alaska is famous for its rugged mountains, coastal wetlands and isolated islands. There is also a volcanic chain in Alaska, where the State has more than 3,000 rivers and 3 million lakes. At 6,190 meters, Denali is the highest mountain in Alaska and North America.
Tourist destinations in Alaska:
Alaska is nature's greatest temple and must-visit destination for tourists. This is a desolate land, carved valleys on glaciers, rugged mountain ranges. You can come here to enjoy hiking, backpacking, fishing and rafting. Denali National Park, Arctic Gate National Park, Kenai Fjords National Park, and the Mendenhall Glacier are some of the most popular attractions in Alaska.
Alaska has many attractions to attract tourists to visit. Wildlife viewing tours to spot Kodiak bears for salmon or migratory birds and whales. Alaska Native Heritage Center, Portage Glacier, Chugach State Park, Tongass National Forest, Sitka National Historical Park and Totem Heritage Center are other must-see destinations in Alaska.
Transportation in Alaska
Primarily served by seasonal airlines, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is the gateway to Alaska.
The Alaska Railroad has played an important role in the state's socio-economic development. The network extends from Seward and Whittier to Fairbanks.
Due to its location, the state has a relatively small road network. The 1700-mile Alaska highway provides a link between the 48 below states and Alaska via Canada. Snowmobile and rickshaw are effective means of local transportation.
