Geography of New Mexico
General Features New Mexico is a state located in the southwest and western regions of the United States. It is bordered by Colorado on the north; by Oklahoma and Texas on the east; by Texas and the Mexican state of Chihuahua on the south; and it borders Arizona on the west. The geographic center of the state is in Torrance County. The landscape of New Mexico comprises four land regions: Great Plains: The region extending from a high plateau in the north to south across the Pecos River is referred to as the Great Plains. The region is used for cattle ranches. High Plains: The area along the eastern edge of the state, south of the Canadian River is known as the High Plains. The region is also known as the Staked Plains. Rocky Mountains: The central part of New Mexico is covered by the Rocky Mountains. These extend from New Mexico to Colorado. The highest mountain peak in the state, Wheeler Peak, is found in this range. The Basin and Range Region: Lying to the south of the Rocky Mountains, the Basin and Range Region covers about one-third of the state. This area consists of rugged mountain ranges. The important mountain peaks in the area include the Guadalupe, Mogollon, Organ, Sacramento, and San Andres mountain ranges. This is also the 36th most populous state in the US and as of 2016, New Mexico shares borders with the US states of Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Utah. The state also shares international borders with Mexico. Santa Fe is the capital city of New Mexico, while Albuquerque is the state's largest city. History of New Mexico
Evidence of the earliest human existence in what is now known as New Mexico, are sandians found near Albuquerque in the Sandia Cave. Then, around (10000-500) BC, the Cochise arrived and started growing corn, beans and squash in southwestern New Mexico.
The advent of agriculture led to the entry of the ancient Pueblo Indians. They settled along the upper Rio Grande River and its tributaries and built a thriving sedentary culture around the 13th century AD.
Around 1528-1536, Cabeza de Vaca, along with Estevan, Moor and two others, entered Culiacdn, after crossing present-day southern New Mexico. It was them who started the gossip about golden cities, which were later identified by Fray Marcos de Niza as Cibola's Seven Golden Cities, also known as the mythical Seven Golden Cities. Rumors prompted Francisco Vasquez de Coronado to begin a search around (1540-42) to find these golden cities. Then the term Nuevo Mexico appeared.
After more than 50 years, Juan de Onate entered Mexico with a number of Spanish settlers and soldiers and more than 7,000 livestock. He then established the first Spanish settlement on 11 July 1598 in New Mexico. The settlement was named San Juan de los Caballeros and is located on the Rio Grande bordered by Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. Onate went on to become the first governor of Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico, the new province. Santa Fe was eventually established and declared the capital of New Mexico in 1610.
A number of Apache revolts (indigenous North Americans from the southwest) in 1676 and then the Pueblos in 1680 gradually drove the Spanish out of New Mexico. The Spaniards did not dare to return until their control over the place was reestablished by a Diego de Vargas Zapata campaign in 1692. The 18th century saw the development of blankets. farming, farming and mining and this paved the way for the development of Spanish culture in New Mexico that still persists.
New Mexico became a region of Mexico, after Mexico became independent from Spain in 1821.
In 1846, the Mexican-American War began, in which Stephen W. Kearny annexed New Mexico into the United States. Meanwhile, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ending the US-Mexico War. After the events of war and treaty, Mexico surrendered to the US southwest and California to the United States. On September 9, 1850, the US government established the Territory of New Mexico that included present-day Arizona, New Mexico and parts of Colorado. The territory was later expanded in 1853 through the Purchase of Gadsden. In 1862 the battles of Velarde de and Glorieta Pass ended coalition in New Mexico.
On 6 January 1912, Congress declared New Mexico the 47th state in the Union. Geography
New Mexico is spread over a total area of 121,412 square miles. The state borders Colorado to the north, Arizona to the west, Texas and Oklahoma to the east. To the south, New Mexico has international borders with Mexico while the eastern two-thirds border Texas. Wheeler Peak 13,161 feet above sea level is the highest point in New Mexico and the Red Bluff Reservoir stands 2,842 feet above sea level the lowest point in New Mexico. The state's main rivers are the Rio Grande and the Pecos, while the main lakes are the Elephant Butte Reservoir, Conchas Lake and Navajo Reservoir.
There is water scarcity in New Mexico and it has a water surface area of about 250 square miles. The four corners of New Mexico's northwest corner include the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. This particular corner is notoriously the only point where the four states meet. Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and Albuquerque is its largest city.

The highest recorded temperature in Lakewood, New Mexico was 122 degrees Fahrenheit on June 27, 1994; while the lowest recorded temperature was –50 degrees F in Gavilan on February 1, 1951.
