Before the 16th century, Oregon was home to many Native American tribes. The Spanish explorers, led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, were the first Europeans to arrive in Oregon in 1543. The Oregon University System (OUS) has seven public universities. Seventeen community colleges are operated by a locally elected body. Willamette University is the oldest university of Western United States. It was established in 1842. The oldest community college is Southwestern Oregon Community College, which was established in 1959. It is the second-oldest public university. Founded in 1876, it is one of the sixty members of the Association of American Universities.
